REMINDER: These assignments are set up to be submitted in TEAMS.  Go to your school email and click on the TEAMS app (located in the waffle) to view and submit assignment.  Also, you can go to Common Lit and do any of supplemental assignments there. Students who have been doing these, have seen improvements in their grade! : )  Although we are not allowed to take new grades, we are allowed to replace existing grades.  Email me for info. ; ) This is the last week.

 

Lesson Objective:

In "Song of Myself," the poet Walt Whitman explores the nature of human identity.

As students read, they will ponder the essential question, “What makes you who you are?”

In his poem, Poe ponders whether or not everything in life is simply an illusion. As students read, they will be reflect on the theme of Fate & Free Will as it relates to the text.
 
Lesson Objectives: 
Students will analyze the poem using the TPDASTT method to figure out the theme.
Students will analyze the author's word choices and analyze their role in the poem.
 
Standards Being Assessed
 

9-10.L.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings in grades 9- 10 reading and content; interpret figures of speech in context and analyze their role in a text; analyze nuances in the meaning of words with similar denotations.

Tasks to Complete:
 
1) Log into Common Lit to read the poem, annotate the poem, and answer the questions/short answer that go along with the poem.
2) Read over the notes about the TPDASTT method (see attachment below) that will help you determine the theme of the poem.
3) Complete TPDASTT student template for the poem. It is in TEAMS for completion & submission.
 
 
 
 
Students will finish the analysis of E. White’s personal narrative, “Death of a Pig” to analyze the cumulative impact words and phrases have on the meaning and tone of a text.
 
Standards Being Assessed: 
 
RL.4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and
connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, such as how language evokes a sense of time and place, and how it communicates an informal or formal tone.

1) Read about the purpose of the assignment and Explanatory Essay Rubric from district website
2) Read the narrative again & complete the document with questions in TEAMS
3) Read Prompt (again!)
4)  Review the supplemental PPT about Explanatory Writing from last week
5) Read and complete Rhetorical Analysis assignment, making sure to go back over the TN Ready Essay Rubric that is provided
6) Send me a Remind when you have turned in the assignment in TEAMS
