AP Theory

Monday, March 23 - hey guys....we'll start the week with a little review of 7th chords....for today's worksheet, simply write the indicated seventh chord in root position (remember the construction for these 7th chords is a major triad plus a minor 7th.
Happy Tuesday, March 24!  Today, we'll review writing V7 chords in indicated keys.  Remember that you will first identify the key, then count up to the 5th scale degree.  That will tell you what chord you are writing.  For example....if I'm in the key of C, the V7 chord in that key would be a G7 chord.  Then construct the chord, using the formula-major chord plus a minor 7th.  You do not have to use accidentals here, since there is a written key signature!
Hump day, yay!  Wednesday, March 25-new material for you today.  We'll look at the 4 types of inversions for 7th chords-root position, first inversion, 2nd inversion, and 3rd inversion.  Your worksheet has a great example at the top as to how to write these inversions.  The exercises than ask you to write and identify V7 chords in the 4 inversions.
It's Thursday! March 26th-now, let's look at the figured bass symbols for V7 chord inversions.  These are different than triads.  They are:  root position-V7, 1st inversion-6/5, 2nd inversion-4/3, 3rd inversion-4/2. (These will look like fractions, of course:))  Today's worksheet will give you some practice writing V7 chords in all the inversions, and get you accustomed to seeing the figured bass for these.
Happy, happy Friday!  March 27-we'll wrap up the week adding a little more rigor.  Today's worksheet has a narrative at the top explaining the 5 types of 7th chords....so far in our learning, we have only been dealing with one type-the V7 chord.  The instructions are pretty self explanatory, and some examples are given.  You'll then get some practice building the 5 types of 7th chords on a given pitch.  Enjoy, and I'll be back with you next week.  Have a safe and socially distant week-end!!
