Siegel High School’s Humanities Academy, led by the Dean of Humanities Academy Melissa Deer, welcomed families and community members on April 28 for a showcase of end-of-year student projects, highlighting the depth and diversity of academic and creative work across the school.
The event featured presentations from students in AP Capstone, AP Seminar, Dual Enrollment English 1020, English language learning classes, Humanities Academy senior courses, and freshmen participating in Tennessee History Day. Additional contributions came from the Creative Writing Club, marketing students, and the school’s arts program, offering attendees a wide range of research, performances, and original work.
Guests were greeted in the lobby by a student pianist, while culinary arts students provided refreshments. Plants and flowers grown by agriculture students adorned the space.
The Humanities Academy is supported by Middle Tennessee State University, providing students with unique academic and experiential opportunities. Throughout the year, students engage with monthly guest speakers, participate in campus visits and tours, and take part in hands-on learning experiences. This semester, students visited charity: water, an international nonprofit focused on expanding access to clean water. Inspired by the experience, students launched a fundraising effort to raise $10,000 to help fund the construction of a well in Uganda. To donate, visit https://tinyurl.com/ysunyef3.
Parents, teachers, and community members engaged with students throughout the evening, discussing projects and gaining insight into the research, creativity, and critical thinking demonstrated across disciplines.
