1)  Why We Write

Pds. 1-2 I will give you a paper w/ the questions

Pds. 3-7 Use the Ice Breaker paper from prior class

Why Write at All? What’s the Point? What does it mean to be able to communicate effectively? How does writing help me express my ideas, thoughts, and opinions?

VIDEO 1 “Why I Write” (about 3 min)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTfUl8nK4xY

  • “Why I Write” The narrator begins her “Why I Write” story with a flashback about an experience from when she was in second grade. What was her purpose in beginning with a flashback?
  • There’s that saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” What is your opinion of that little saying after viewing this video?
  • The images in the video are sometimes shown in color and sometimes in black & white. How does the use of color impact the narrator’s message?

VIDEO #2 “Why Write” (about 3 min)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djEeNy0BZZ0

  • “Why Write” What are some of your favorite reasons about why people write? It’s ok to paraphrase— you don’t have to copy them exactly.
  • What have you learned about yourself from writing?
  • Do you think “real writers” find writing to be easy?

VIDEO #3 “Why do You Like to Write?” (about 3 min)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09RHl2g4Ugo

  • Why does the main narrator feel like she has to write?
  • How does this narrator show perseverance?
  • In what way can writing be more powerful than explaining something out loud?

After we have discussed, turn paper into your class’s tray on the back counter.

Agenda 8/9-8/10

  1. Ice Breaker Activity—If I won the lottery….

If you won $10 million in the lottery, what would you spend your money on? Create a list in Padlet to share with the class. You have 4-5 minutes to brainstorm. Everything must be school appropriate, or I won’t t approve your post, & you will lose participation points.

Go to https://padlet.com/greens14/g76tytfilvmq39eh

  • Click on the red plus sign in the bottom right corner of your screen to create a post.
  • Add your first and last name and your period # in the title spot. In the space below the title, you can either type your list OR take a pic of it & add it to your post.
  • I must approve your post before it can be seen. You may need to refresh your screen from time to time to see the new posts.
  • Read your classmates’ posts & post one comment/question on another classmate's post that share at least one of the same ideas/items that you have. MUST INCLUDE YOUR 1ST NAME AND LAST LETTER OF YOUR LAST NAME.

Next, on your paper, create a minimum of 1-3 logical categories for your items/ideas. Sort your items underneath the categories that you created.

Reflection: Please answer the following questions honestly and in brief responses.

  1. Which category had the most items under it? Why do you think that is? What does that say about you?
  2. What was your shortest category? Why do you think that is? What does that say about you?

  1. Info sheet

Get out your copy of the info sheet and read each section carefully.

Join your class's Remind if you haven't! Codes are on your class info sheet.
